چکیده

Binocular disparity is one of many clues to perceive depth. Random-dot stereograms (RDS) designed by Julesz [1] enables us to make visual stimuli that exclusively have binocular disparity as a depth clue. Many physiological studies were done about visual cortical neurons which respond to binocular disparity [2], but it is still not clear what large-scale activity of such neurons detects correspondent regions in both retinae and calculates amounts of disparity, which is considered to be necessary to perceive stereoscopic image. This study investigated magnetic fields evoked by visual stimuli including binocular disparities to elucidate macroscopic responses of visual cortical neurons in the process of stereoscopic perception.

Stereoscopic vision: What's the first step?

Neurons in primary visual cortex respond to binocular disparity, the raw material of stereoscopic depth perception. Although these neurons are probably essential to depth perception, a recent study has shown that they are unable to compute depth itself.

Stereoscopic advantages for vection induced by radial, circular, and spiral optic flows.

Although observer motions project different patterns of optic flow to our left and right eyes, there has been surprisingly little research into potential stereoscopic contributions to self-motion perception. This study investigated whether visually induced illusory self-motion (i.e., vection) is influenced by the addition of consistent stereoscopic information to radial, circular, and spiral (i...

Depth Perception and the History of Three-Dimensional Art: Who Produced the First Stereoscopic Images?

The history of the expression of three-dimensional structure in art can be traced from the use of occlusion in Palaeolithic cave paintings, through the use of shadow in classical art, to the development of perspective during the Renaissance. However, the history of the use of stereoscopic techniques is controversial. Although the first undisputed stereoscopic images were presented by Wheatstone...
